Reims Cathedral with Medieval Procession
Artwork: Painted between 1825 and 1838, Reims Cathedral with Medieval Procession portrays the magnificent façade of Notre-Dame de Reims animated by a ceremonial medieval procession in the foreground. David Roberts combines architectural precision with lively historical detail, celebrating both the grandeur of the cathedral and the rich traditions that surrounded one of France's most important sacred monuments.
Artist: David Roberts (1796–1864) was a Scottish painter renowned for his architectural views and travel scenes throughout Europe and the Middle East. Celebrated for his exceptional draftsmanship and mastery of perspective, he produced some of the nineteenth century's finest depictions of historic monuments, churches, and cathedrals.
Curator's Notes: Rather than presenting the cathedral as a solitary monument, Roberts places it within the life of the city through the inclusion of a medieval procession. The combination of monumental architecture and human activity gives the scene a remarkable sense of scale, history, and celebration, illustrating the cathedral's role as both a masterpiece of Gothic design and the heart of civic and religious life.
Paper: All physical prints are produced on Hahnemühle German Etching 310 gsm fine-art paper.
