The Raising of Lazarus
Artwork: Painted around 1310–1311, The Raising of Lazarus illustrates Christ's miracle of calling Lazarus from the tomb, one of the most powerful moments in the Gospel of John. Duccio's expressive figures, luminous colors, and elegant composition reflect the spiritual depth and refined craftsmanship of early Italian painting.
Artist: Duccio di Buoninsegna (c. 1260–1319) was the leading painter of the Sienese School and one of the most influential artists of medieval Italy. Renowned for his graceful figures, rich color, and devotional imagery, Duccio helped transform religious painting by introducing greater naturalism, emotion, and elegance. His masterpieces laid the foundation for the Italian Renaissance and continue to be celebrated as landmarks of Western art.
Curator's Notes: The Raising of Lazarus is one of the most compelling narrative scenes from Duccio's celebrated Maestà altarpiece. Its careful composition, expressive storytelling, and remarkable preservation make it an enduring masterpiece of early Renaissance devotional art.
